The National Electrical Code’s 2002 revisions address the issue of fire hazard in commercial buildings that abandoned wire and cable cause.
In order to address the service need created by the NEC requirement to remove abandoned cable and wire, including the potential for liability to building owners and the potential loss of time and money associated with failed inspections, INS has developed the following protocol for cable abatement including:

-
Assessment of telecommunications infrastructure.
-
Tagging and inventory of abandoned cable & equipment in Telecommunication Rooms, chases, and ceilings.
-
Removal of tagged cable, hardware, and equipment.
-
Local state, county, and city permit and inspection practices will dictate the enforcement of the abandoned wire provisions of the 2002 NEC.
If the governing organization compels abatement only if a large renovation and/or demolition is underway, the effects could be minor. But if compliance with the code is mandated for an entire building while the building remains operational, Landlords should consider developing an on-going plan to bring their property into compliance.
Contact INS for an appointment to analyze your particular cable abatement circumstances.
